About the Role
At Deswik, we are transforming how mines operate worldwide. As we shift to a SaaS-first model on AWS, we need a Technical Team Lead who is an engineer first and a manager second.
This is not a "clipboard" management role. You will be the technical anchor for the Global Operations team, spending 50%+ of your time hands-on—writing code to automate fixes, troubleshooting complex AWS infrastructure, and resolving tickets that are too hard for the L2s. You will lead by example: enforcing coding standards, reviewing pull requests, and building the automation tools (and potentially AI agents) that allow us to scale without throwing bodies at the problem.
What You’ll Do
- Execute & Resolve: Personally handle the most complex technical escalations and critical incidents. You are the final line of defense for our SaaS infrastructure and Enterprise products.
- Code & Automate: Write, test, and maintain production-grade code (Python, PowerShell, TypeScript or similar) to automate repetitive support tasks. You won't just ask for tools; you will build them.
- Engineering Standards: Enforce software engineering best practices within the support team, including Git flow, pull requests, code reviews, and writing clean, testable code.
- Lead the Squad: Manage the 24/7 operational roster and on-call schedules, ensuring coverage while mentoring the team on technical execution rather than just process compliance.
- Incident Command: Act as the technical Incident Commander during Sev 1 outages—logging into the console, querying logs, and driving resolution while coordinating with Engineering.
- Deploy AI & Innovation: Experiment with and implement AI agents or automation workflows to triage alarms and self-heal infrastructure.
- SaaS Reliability: Monitor AWS CloudWatch, run SQL diagnostics, and ensure the stability of our cloud footprint.
What You Bring
- Hybrid Experience: Proven experience as a Senior SysAdmin, DevOps Engineer, or Support Lead where you were writing code regularly.
- Coding Proficiency: You are comfortable writing complex scripts and tools from scratch (Python, PowerShell, or TypeScript). You understand concepts like error handling, modularity, and testing.
- CI/CD & Git: Experience using version control (Git) and CI/CD pipelines. You know how to review code and provide constructive feedback to junior engineers.
- Deep AWS & Windows Knowledge: Strong background in Windows Server, IIS, and core AWS services (EC2, RDS, Lambda). You can troubleshoot a server without a UI.
- Incident Management: Experience running high-pressure incidents where you had to make technical decisions to restore service.
- The "Builder" Mindset: You hate doing the same manual task twice. You have a history of automating yourself out of a job.
- (Bonus) AI/LLM Experience: Experience prompting, configuring, or building simple AI agents to assist with troubleshooting or data retrieval.
Why You’ll Love It Here
- Real Engineering: You won't get rusty here. You will be coding and touching production infrastructure every day.
- Modern Stack: We are moving to SaaS/AWS, and you will be key in building the automated support layer for it.
- Impact: Your code will directly reduce toil and improve the life of your team.
- Flexibility: Hybrid schedule (3 days in our Brisbane office, 2 days WFH), competitive pay, and a culture that values technical excellence over bureaucracy.
